NEW YORK CITY — A classic New York City story. A biopic of a Broadway legend. A documentary about a legendary Harlem music festival. And "Coming 2 America."

Those are the New York City-based films that nabbed 2022 Oscar nominations.

The remake of "West Side Story" nabbed a best picture nod along with a best supporting actress nod for its star Ariana DeBose. It also secured a best director nomination for Steven Spielberg.

Ariana DeBose attends the "West Side Story" New York Premiere at Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center on Nov. 29.

Few films boast a New York pedigree quite like "West Side Story." The musical with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim tells a story of love and war in a largely Puerto Rican neighborhood on the West Side in the 1950s. It started life on Broadway before being adapted into a classic 1961 film.

And other music-themed New York City films fared well in this batch of Oscar nods.

“Tick, Tick … Boom!” garnered a best actor nomination for Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Jonathan Larson, the legendary Broadway musician wrote "Rent" and the selfsame musical "Tick, Tick... Boom!"

A documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival — “Summer of Soul (Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” — scored a nod for best documentary.

The Big Apple nominations weren't all music-focused inclined. "Coming 2 America" — the sequel to the classic 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy — grabbed a nod for best makeup and hair styling.
