This grand loft-style condo is in a SoHo building, on Crosby Street in New York, that had a starring role in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada,” serving as the sexy downtown bachelor pad of the fictional designer James Holt.
“It was shot in the building, in this exact same line of apartments,” said listing agent Leonard Steinberg, of Compass. “The building has that vibe that says SoHo, Manhattan and nothing else.”
The two-bedroom apartment has the same vibe, he said. “When you walk into this apartment, you know in an instant that you’re in New York City. It’s such an authentic New York City experience.”
The second-floor apartment was renovated and redesigned by David Howell, president of Manhattan-based DHD Architecture & Interior Design, about 10 years ago, Steinberg said. “He is one of those designers who is known for his authenticity and honesty to location and place.”
“This feels like a super-cool SoHo experience—the brick walls, the soaring ceilings,” he said.
The nine-unit, six-story building was built in 1900 and converted to residential lofts in 2001, according to the listing.
“I remember walking into this building when it was raw space,” Steinberg said. “It was one of the first ultra-luxury SoHo buildings that was a condo with a full-time doorman.”
The second floors of these old buildings often have the tallest ceilings, he said. “I have clients with big artwork who are specifically looking for these apartments.”
The expansive great room features 16-foot ceilings, cast-iron columns, more exposed brick walls, a wall of west-facing windows, an oversized gas-burning fireplace and a wall of custom-built cherry wood cabinetry, he said.
In front of the wall of windows, a sealed-off glass conservatory “is elevated and provides a light-hearted space,” according to the listing. A projection-screen home entertainment system is tucked into the ceiling, converting the living room into a home theater.
A stairway leads to a mezzanine level that holds a home gym and 400-bottle, temperature-controlled wine storage, according to the listing. Below the mezzanine level, the open kitchen features Gaggenau and Sub-Zero appliances.
The primary bedroom features a gas fireplace, an en-suite with marble countertops, heated floors, a sit-in shower and a dry sauna, and “all of the closet space you expect at this price point,” Steinberg said.
Amenities
Amenities include a home gym, two gas fireplaces, 400-bottle temperature-controlled wine storage, a dry sauna and an elevated glass conservatory. Building amenities include a keyed elevator and a full-time doorman.
Neighborhood Notes
“You can literally go to breakfast, lunch and dinner at Balthazar, at the corner of the street,” Steinberg said. “You have transportation one block to the west and one block to the east.”
Trendy SoHo is at the center of downtown Manhattan. “Just to the north you have NoHo and the Village, to the south is Tribeca and to the east you have Nolita and the East Village,” he added.
“Anything from Chanel to a local convenience store is right there, yet Crosby Street is a quiet street,” he said. “You have an element of calm.”
